Area, a New York City nightclub that from 1983 to 1987 blended art + nightlife in an entirely new and transformative way, acted as a significant influence on the spirit of Jupiter Disco. Every six weeks the interior of the club was ripped apart, with a new thematic vision rebuilt in its place. Marrying installation art and performance art, the team engineered a wholly unique and ever-changing nightclub experience celebrating themes of architecture, religion, art, and popular culture.

This Halloween weekend, on October 28th, the team behind Jupiter Disco is pleased to bring you our humble tribute to Area. For one night only, we will channel our collective unconscious and transform the bar into a surrealist dreamscape celebrating the work of history’s most imaginative thinkers and artists. Release yourself from the confines of logic and rational thinking and let your unconscious rule. Costumes encouraged.

The soundtrack to your time-bending journey will be provided by two of New York City’s most celebrated DJs, Justin Strauss & Prince Language.

Justin Strauss needs no introduction, and as one of the original Area residents we couldn’t ask for a more fitting DJ to helm the decks for this party. Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history – no less do so with such iconic credentials as he. Since Justin was 17, when his first band was signed to Island Records, Justin has had a career that reads like a Who’s-Who of the music scene, spinning at nearly every dance club that you’d ever want to go to. Starting as DJ at New York’s legendary Mudd Club, he spun his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area, Tunnel, M.K., Life, Centro Fly and more, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers not just in New York, but in the world.

Prince Language is one of New York City’s premiere underground DJs and producers. Born and raised in Chicago, his diverse musical sensibility and mixing style are strongly influenced by that city’s rich musical tradition, especially its heritage as the birthplace of house music. Raised on a steady musical diet of cassette tapes of disco and house legends Ron Hardy and the Hot Mix 5, Language began DJing at Chicago warehouse parties and soon found himself holding down numerous residencies throughout the city. Moving to New York in 1999, he soon met Philadelphia DJ Rich Medina, and together the pair established the now-legendary Stoned Soul parties. In 2002 he formed the NegroClash crew with DJs Lindsey and Duane, and in 2004 the Village Voice named NegroClash the “Best Party In Manhattan To Dance Sweatily To Smart Music.” The crew’s commitment to highlighting electronic sounds in black music brought a host of legendary DJ’s to their residency at New York’s APT, including Afrika Bambaataa, Juan Atkins, Marshall Jefferson, Red Alert, Fab 5 Freddy, and Larry Heard/Mr. Fingers. The last decade has found demand for Prince Language’s DJ sets bringing him to Dubai, Rio De Janeiro, Sydney, Istanbul, London, Berlin, and Moscow, among other destinations.
