This week’s biggest news — short of Mother Nature’s nasty arctic blast — is the sudden grand opening of Output, NYC’s most promising new nightclub (well, at least until that other club opens up down the road from it sometime later this year…). Early this week, word broke that the Williamsburg club (which comes courtesy of the same crew responsible for Cielo and will be very close neighbors with Brooklyn Bowl, Kinfolk Studios, and Wythe Hotel) was ready to open — an announcement rapidly followed by news of two massive opening weekend parties (see lineups below). In a much-welcomed sign of goodwill, Output management today declared that both opening weekend events will now have free entry (instead of the original $20 advance/$30 doors admission). We’re just keeping our fingers crossed the place can keep out the nightlife vultures long enough for us actual music heads to get in there… See you there, hopefully!
(And on the other end of the spectrum, we’d like to give a quick shoutout to the just slightly older Bossa Nova Civic Club, which opened its doors in Bushwick in early December — sure, it’s a bit out of the way for most of us, but with a no-cover policy, cheap drinks, seating, smoke machines, a kick-ass sound system, a proper dancefloor, three bathrooms, an outdoor smoking patio, and, most importantly, a calendar chockfull of nights from NYC’s best house/disco/techno DJs, it’s rapidly becoming our favorite place to dance. In spite of Brooklyn’s new megaclubs, there will always be room for expertly managed, high-quality venues like BNCC.)
We’ve got this weekend’s best lined up for you below (and as always, the events that get our most glowing recommendations are marked by **), but remember to check the calendar for the full roster of what’s going on.
P.S. We haven’t forgotten about the rest of those 2012 in Review pieces! 2013 has just started out a bit too demanding for our liking, but keep checking back (or follow us on Twitter or Facebook) for some awesome Q&As from some of your favorite NYC musicmakers: The Crystal Ark, Fixed’s JDH, Soul 2 Seoul (Plant Music), DJ BLT, The Dog & Pony Show’s Paul Raffaele, and DJ Scallywag.
