TGIF, dancers! Read on for the latest news, followed by our top picks for where to find the best dance music in NYC this weekend.
- TBA Brooklyn is hosting a party Monday (10/17) to raise awareness and funds for the victims of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. DJs include Cry Baby, Andrew Vogt, Orazio Rispo, and lots more.
- Market Hotel has temporarily closed following a police raid in which the NYPD accused the non-profit arts space of “warehousing alcohol” (in spite of its staff only finding out an hour previous that its temporary special-event beer-and-wine permit had been denied). The venue has been and continues to fully comply with the law while it awaits a permanent on-premises full retail liquor license.
- In other unpleasant authorities-vs.-venues news, the New York State Liquor Authority will not be granting all-night permits to bars and clubs statewide this New Year’s Eve, due to the holiday falling on a Sunday and state Blue Laws prohibiting the sale of liquor between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sundays.
- Next week is pretty massive for us: We’re super excited to be hosting not one but TWO excellent parties. On Thursday, 10/20, we’ll be returning to the Bad Room for an all-night affair with one of our favorite labels in the world, Nein Records, to dance to a very special guest from Berlin (trust us on this one — he routinely blows us away with his remixes, productions, radio shows, and podcasts, and he completely killed it last time he was in NYC), along with our ever-rad resident Facets; it’s FREE all night with RSVP. Then, two days later (Saturday, 10/22), we’ll be throwing down in a secret Greenpoint location to help celebrate the first release on Facets’ new label, https://soundcloud.com/samorecords — Pixelife’s Chimeras in the Matrix. On the bill are Pixelife (playing live), both of the EP’s remixers Tronik Youth and Antoni Maiovvi, and label head Facets. Although we’ll be going late for this one, we highly recommend getting there early to beat the crowd! Grab $10 advance tickets on Resident Advisor now or get ’em at the door ($20) — either way, RSVP here to receive an email with location information on the day of the party.
You’ll find our top weekend recommendations for dancing below (as always, the most essential events are marked by **); you can also visit our calendar for the full list of what’s going on. Catch you on the dancefloor…
